Atmospheric horror game adventure game

The Door in the Basement is an atmospheric pixelated horror game developed by Aegon Games Ltd. Here players will have a chilling adventure inside a strange, subterranean world. Your goal is to navigate through the dark tunnels and find your way out. However, horrific creatures are roaming the tunnels.

The Door in the Basement is more or less a walking simulator, with simple puzzles and chase scenes thrown in. However, these puzzles are your standard, run-of-the-mill enigmas usually found in horror games. What makes the game stand out is its superbly crafted atmosphere that will scare you witless.

What is The Door in the Basement?

The Door in the Basement features a door in the basement of the young protagonist. One that no one else but the young man can see. One day, as you're packing boxes, the door once again appears. Finally, you enter, and you are whisked to another world. Here, you will go through caverns, bramble pits, and eventually into the bowels of an unholy and bloody machine.

The gameplay is simple and typical of horror games. There is also a definite Silent Hill inspiration that lingers throughout its 2-3 hour runtime. As mentioned, the goal is to navigate the various maps, discover the mystery that brought you there, and find a way to escape. To do so, you will need to solve puzzles. Although, unlike escape room games, the puzzles here are light and easy to solve.

Moreover, although their abrupt appearance will still give you a good scare, you can easily outmaneuver the AI. However, these are not what makes the game great. What makes it scary is its atmosphere, filled with fog, dust, rattling chains, and other sound effects. Its pixelated art style also adds an entire layer of ambiance and immersion.  It also helps that the texture and assets look well-detailed.

Should you play it?

Overall, The Door in the Basement is a good indie game to pick up if you are into horror adventures. Although it is light on the puzzles and gameplay elements, it is heavy on the atmosphere. The environment is so well-crafted that it will fill you with tension the entire time you are playing. Combined with an incredible sound design and you will have an immersive and horrific journey.
